With so many different types of lightbulbs currently available, you may wonder why you should spend more on LED lightbulbs. There are many reasons to choose LED lightbulbs, including energy savings, time savings and yes, even monetary savings. There are new energy efficiency standards, which is one reason to choose LED lightbulbs. LEDs use about a quarter of the energy that incandescent lightbulbs do. With more environmentally friendly options available, the government has been prompted to phase out the production of many incandescent bulbs. By the beginning of 2012, 100 watt incandescent bulbs will no longer be made. The production of 75 watt incandescent bulbs will be phased out by 2013, followed by 60 watt and 40 watt bulbs in 2014. This will leave consumers with choices between LED lightbulbs, CFL lightbulbs and halogen lightbulbs. While the upfront cost of LED lightbulbs requires more of an investment than other types of lightbulbs, LED lightbulbs usually pay for themselves in anywhere from three to ten years, depending on the energy rates in your area. You will continue to see savings on your utility bills for many years after that. Furthermore, as technology continues to improve and increase, the price of LED lightbulbs will actually decrease. LED lightbulbs can further reduce utility bills from the cost to operate central air conditioning units. LED lightbulbs naturally keep your home cooler because they do not use a heat powered filament. Instead, electricity passes through the bulb which acts as a semiconductor and then emits energy in the form of light. The actual savings will vary based on the size of your home and the climate you live in. The life of LED lightbulbs is typically 25 to 30 years. That is up to six times as long as CFL lightbulbs and at generally 50 to 60 times long as incandescent lightbulbs, which will save you money in replacement costs over the long run. This does not mean that you cannot continue using the bulb at the end of its lifetime, simple that it will be dimmer. In fact, LEDs rarely burn out; the light output slowly and continuously decreases as they age. Additionally, the life of LED lightbulbs is unaffected by cycling on and off. LED lightbulbs can be used in any room of the house, even in stairwells or bathrooms where the light is frequently switched on and off. LED lightbulbs can also be installed in garages or workshops as vibration from motors or machines does not affect the life of LED bulbs either. As with any type of lightbulbs, quality matters. Look for LED lightbulbs made by reputable manufactures with an established reputation. Many companies also offer extended warranties on LED lightbulbs; the longer, the better. To make you dollar go even further, look for LED lightbulbs that have achieved the Energy Star rating, which is a benchmark in the lighting industry. As you can see there are many reasons to choose LED lightbulbs. They are available in globe shaped styles as well as flood or spotlight styles, making them ideal for virtually any household fixture.
