The Kindle is a hugely popular digital eBook reader brought out by Amazon. Many readers have discovered the advantages of reading digital books and are leaving traditional books behind them. When someone decides to buy a Kindle, they are faced with a choice: Kindle 2 or Kindle DX? This article will help clear up some of the differences. It remains a personal choice though and you should check them both out before you buy one. 1. Price Most readers will instantly recognize that there is a great price difference between the two products. The Kindle 2 costs $259, while the Kindle DX costs $489. With a price tag of almost double the Kindle 2, the Kindle DX had better provide a lot of extra features! Let's take a look at them: 2. Screen size The Kindle 2 has a 6" diagonal screen size, while the Kindle DX has an amazing 9.7" diagonal screen size. That might not sound like too much of a difference, but it actually results in the DX having 2.5 times more screen surface area compared to the Kindle 2. 3. Portability The Kindle 2 is smaller, so it is obviously much more portable. Neither device is small enough to tote around in your pocket, but you could probably fit the Kindle 2 into your purse or briefcase without an issue. If you plan to keep your digital reader in your car, both devices are equally portable. 4. Keyboard One difference that Amazon doesn't advertise is the keyboard layout. In an effort to save space, the DX only has 3 rows of keys compared to 4 rows of keys on the Kindle 2. Since a standard QWERTY keyboard contains 4 rows of keys, you might wonder how Amazon accomplished this. Here's what they did. Basically, they eliminated the upper row with all the numbers. The numbers must be accessed via a separate onscreen menu. Depending on how often you plan to use the keyboard to make annotations to your eBooks, you might consider this a plus or a minus. 5. Hard Drive Space Both of the Kindles have a small hard drive compared to most media devices, but eBooks don't take up much file space. The DX has twice as much storage space as the Kindle 2. The DX has 4GB and can hold 3500 books, while the Kindle 2 has 2GB and can hold 1500 books. Just depends on how much reading you do! 6. Target Audience Finally here the target market for each device appears to be a little different. The smaller Kindle is better suited for the mainstream customer who would like to read books, while the larger Kindle is primarily marketed to people who want to read textbooks and newspapers. So which Kindle is the best for you? This is entirely a matter of choice and is left up to you. Both products have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Depending on your budget and what you plan to read on your Kindle, either version will be the right choice for your individual needs.
