Digital technology has changed the way we live and so is its impact on audio and music. There are no longer cassettes and magnetic tapes that get stuck over a period of time and tapes where the quality of music deteriorates with the number of playbacks. The MP3 format of storing and recording music has revolutionized the music industry. Chronologically speaking, the MP3 format was the first one introduced and MP4 format is the successor of MP3 format. Both are extremely popular among people. The idea of introducing the MP3 format was to bring in compression techniques in storage of music and audio files which were earlier occupying large disk spaces. The terms MP3 MP4 players is a marketing term coined for portable media players. They comply with certain pre-defined standards and formats of digital media storage. Digital sampling is the process used to sample audio waves and code them as binary numbers which are later stored in a particular format like MP3 or MP4. All MP3 players have some common features. Firstly, they have a storage component like a flash memory or an external miniature hard drive where all the media files are stored. Content is placed on an MP3 player by a process called ‘syncing’. Player-compatible software is to be installed in your PC before transfer. A CD ROM is usually given along with the player when you buy one for installing the software. They have an embedded processor which manages the whole system and is responsible for operation of the player. Lastly, there is an audio codec microchip which converts the digital format back into analogue sound. The attraction in an MP3 MP4 player is the compact size and long battery hours. Most of these players are powered by batteries. You could always use a set of rechargeable batteries which are quite handy and can be reused for a number of times. Music can be listened using earphones. This is ok if you are alone traveling or riding a car or lazing around in a beach. However, if you are a group of people wanting to listen to some good music, you should connect this MP3 MP4 player to a stereo jack. A stereo jack is nothing but a speaker system which can be connected directly to your MP3 player. In some cases where ports are unavailable due to very small sizes of the players, a converter cable with a USB port on one side can be plugged on to the player and connected to a stereo jack which again supports USB connections.
