It has been awhile since Woody Allen has produced a film that really delights his audience, but he is able to pull it off this time around with Midnight in Paris. What makes the film unique is that it’s not a comedic classic like Sleeper or Annie Hall, but instead stands alone as a different type of Allen comedy that does not contain a neurotic character but instead is thoughtful and funny. It is for this reason that Midnight in Paris may just be his best film of the past ten years as it shows a different side of Allen’s talents and proves that even he can break out of a set formula now and then. The cinematography throughout the film lead by Darius Khondji and Johanne Debas is simply breathtaking and the film offers plenty of great performances that reveal that the actors and actresses were likely having just as much fun as Allen was as he tightly pulls together an upbeat movie. It’s this joyous tone and fun that has been notably missing from Allen’s dark comedies over the last several years, and it’s nice to see him bring it back. The film stars Owen Wilson in the lead role of Gil who is having a horrible time while staying in Paris; a city known for its beauty and potential for love. As a screenwriter who is trying hard to finish work on a novel his fiancée is not much help (played by Rachel McAdams) as she would rather hang out with her stuck up fried Paul (played by Michael Sheen) then actually spend any time with Gil. Add in the fact that her parents (played by Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller) think that Gil is a cheapskate and hate him for it and you can see why the poor guy is so down. However, this is not the real reason that Gil is so depressed, but instead it’s because he feels that he has born during the wrong time period and that if he was alive during the 1920s he could really get the full effect of the Paris gardens and museums. He also gets depressed while touring these locations getting lost in his own sense of misplaced nostalgia as he thinks about all of the amazing artists and writers from the twenties that he never had the chance to meet or form a bond with. One night in the true style of a writer Gil gets drunk and starts ambling through the streets of Paris (hence the movie title) and finds himself somehow back in time talking to the Fitzgerald’s as Cole Porter plays the piano in the background. He takes the opportunity to talk to the great authors about his novel and then even starts to fall in love with Adriana which complicates matters just a bit. While the rest of the film falls in place along this path, the real charm of the film lays in the fact that it allows the audience to wonder what they would do if they got the chance to live in their ideal world, exploring the concept that the grass is always greener somewhere else.
