Understanding the engineering of the world and objects therein helps to dispel many fears or misconceptions. Often, by learning the scientific or technological explanation for how something works, people find that they are much more comfortable and confident using that particular item. Although there are very few people that would consider 40 watt halogen bulbs to be intimidating, the explanation of their functionality is nonetheless interesting and informative. The first thing that many people do not know about 40 watt halogen bulbs is that they are derivatives of the incandescent light bulb, unlike many other types of energy-efficient light bulb.In the late 1950s, the first halogen bulbs were developed, creating light bulbs that were longer-lasting, but similar in color and style to traditional incandescent light bulbs. 40 watt halogen bulbs require somewhat less energy than higher wattage bulbs in order to operate. They are considerably more energy efficient than their higher wattage counterparts. Like traditional incandescent light bulbs, 40 watt halogen bulbs have a base that screws in to a standard light socket. This base supplies energy to the tungsten filament. This filament is the most essential part of 40 watt halogen bulbs. When the tungsten filament within 40 watt halogen bulbs is exposed to electrical energy in the form of heat, it glows a very bright white. For halogen bulbs that require higher voltages, the filament must be longer. For those that require higher wattages, the filament must be thicker. This wire is coiled into varying configurations, based on the application and the requirements of the bulb. The presence of halogen gas is one of the main differences between 40 watt halogen bulbs and standard incandescent light bulbs. Like the tungsten filament, halogen gas within 40 watt halogen bulbs has a functionality that requires the application of heat. As the tungsten filament is exposed to heat, it not only produces light, it also begins to slowly evaporate. Particles of the filament separate from the rest of the wire and adhere to the interior surface of the bulb. When halogen is exposed to the same heat, it reacts with the tungsten, forming tungsten halide and condensing. When atoms of tungsten halide settle again upon the filament, the halide evaporates, leaving the tungsten behind. This enables filaments within halogen light bulbs to last longer because they are constantly undergoing a regeneration of sorts.Although this occurrence is constantly happening, there is no way to control the exact location where the tungsten particles settle. This means that, over time, a section of the filament will still become thin enough that it breaks and the light bulb burns out. Because heat is such an important factor in the creation of light within 40 watt halogen light bulbs, a stronger type of glass was manufactured. The glass that is now used with these bulbs is either quartz or aluminosilicate glass. The production of halogen bulbs has had many positive implications and has inspired many further innovations to modern light bulbs.
