Whether installing them for security purposes or to shed light on a social area, there is one thing flood light bulbs must possess: brightness. Flood light bulbs are generally some of the brightest on the market, and for good reason. Just one can illuminate a large patio area, or shed light on an area that needs monitored for security purposes. Many flood lights are bright enough to scare off a potential intruder, especially when they are connected to motion sensors. A flood light is a great way to illuminate any outdoor area, and they are generally available in halogen, fluorescent, and LED bulbs. Halogen flood light bulbs are among the brightest on the market. A halogen bulb is most commonly known as the bulb that is in automobile headlamps, but that brightness makes it very suitable for flood and spot lights. Halogen light bulbs burn a tungsten filament just like incandescent bulbs do, but their envelope is made of quartz instead of glass, which allows the bulb to burn much hotter and, therefore, brighter. A process called the halogen cycle occurs inside the bulb, and this chemical reaction allows halogen flood light bulbs to have a long life. The halogen gas inside the envelope reacts with evaporated tungsten and replaces it on the filament, thus keeping the filament from deteriorating and the light bulb lasting longer. Other flood light bulbs are fluorescent lights, or more specifically compact fluorescent lamps, which are also known as CFLs. CFLs are popular not only for their brightness, but their efficiency as well. They generally are not as bright as halogen bulbs, but they use less energy. CFL flood light bulbs produce light through the excitement of mercury vapor. Mercury, in its liquid form, is located inside the bulb, and electric currents running through a CFL excite the mercury and transform it into vapor. Mercury particles run into each other and gain energy, then emit photons (light particles) as a result. This process is extremely efficient, leading those who value low-energy flood light bulbs to use these varieties. Another type of flood light that has recently entered the scene is the LED bulb. LED flood light bulbs use electroluminescence to produce bright light efficiently, much like the fluorescent flood light bulbs. The light-emitting diode, as LEDs are otherwise known, possesses what are called electron holes within the device. When the LED is switched on, electrons rush to these holes, which are held at a lower energy level. To return to the oppositely-charged holes, electrons must shed energy in the form of light photons. LEDs used to be much dimmer than other bulbs, but recent advances have allowed them to be used as flood light bulbs. Either of these three flood light bulbs varieties would work suitably. Some are brighter than others, and some are more energy-efficient. Which one you choose depends entirely on your personal preference. Rest assured, whether you go with a halogen, fluorescent, or LED flood light bulb, it will get the job done and provide bright light to the desired area.
