For many centuries 'PROPERTY FOR SALE BAHAMAS' has been an interesting slogan. In 1492 Christopher Columbus landed at San Salvador and started more than he could ever have envisaged. European civilization, with all its implications, had arrived. An English group of adventurers set out to colonize the islands in 1647. Since then the influence of Britain on the island has persisted. It is thought that Shakespeare might have got the idea for his final play, 'The Tempest' from a shipwreck that occurred in the Bahamas. It happened at the time when these first English colonies were being established. The magician, Prospero, seems to represent all that science and technology stand for whereas poor Caliban the barbarian is savage, but also a victim. It seems that Shakespeare's genius foresaw future tensions that would develop between developed and developing countries. Beside Shakespeare, the islands have attracted the attention of many other creative people. The creator of the James Bond myth could not wait to get out of Europe to the seclusion of the island where he wrote many of his books. The English king who abdicated and had a tendency to favour the Nazis was at least one of the more divergent members of the aristocracy. He was sent off to be governor of the islands to get him out of the country. Princess Margaret also found reason to head out for holidays quite often. Celebrities are good for the economy because they attract many other visitors. Tourism is the life-blood of the country and the fact that an airport has been named after the famous author shows how much famous names are appreciated. It is especially designed for private jets whose occupants will probably be well padded with pounds. A large hospital has also been named after Princess Margaret. There are about seven hundred islands in the group. Early explorers named the area the 'shallow seas' on account of the many bits of land sticking their heads above the water. One of these will represent a status symbol to rival an art masterpiece in snob value. An island can also be an excellent investment. Like an art piece it can be enjoyed for itself as well as it monetary worth. Space and privacy are becoming rare commodities and in the future they will probably become even more valuable. An island offers both of these commodities. No one can build a house next door and block out the view. A democratic and stable government means that the slogan, 'PROPERTY FOR SALE BAHAMAS' can be read with some confidence. Freehold property can be bought and property rights are guaranteed by a responsible government and long tradition of individual rights. A foreigner has the right to buy land here as long as land taxes are paid based on the value of the land. The prospect of buying a seven acre island with an all round sea view certainly has its appeal.
