Many people may not be aware that 60 watt halogen bulbs are available for home use. Halogen bulbs have long been used for commercial and automotive applications, but they have also been available for some time for use both inside and outside the home. Manufacturers have worked to make 60 watt halogen bulbs and other sizes available with standard screw bases to allow for use in standard fixtures and lamps. 60 watt halogen bulbs have some similarities to standard iincandescent bulbs. For example, both types of bulbs operate by heating a metal filament coated with tungsten. The tungsten heats up and becomes vaporized inside the bulb. This chemical reaction creates light. In 60 watt halogen bulbs a halogen gas is added to the inside of the bulb. The halogen gas inside the bulb allows the tungsten vapor to be re-deposited on the filament and recycled for an extended bulb life. Because of their longer life, 60 watt halogen bulbs can be a good choice for homeowners who are interested in reducing the frequency of replacement for their light bulbs. A typical incandescent bulb lasts for about 600 to 1000 hours while 60 watt halogen bulbs can last twice as long or longer. Replacing bulbs less frequently can result in both a cost savings and a time savings. In addition to using 60 watt halogen bulbs for their long life, many homeowners enjoy the quality of light produced by halogen bulbs. Without filters or colored glass, incandescent bulbs tend to produce a slightly yellow light. The reaction created in 60 watt halogen bulbs creates a clean white light. The white light produced by halogen can be desirable for use in accent lighting or other applications. For example, halogen bulbs can highlight the colors in fine art and help to enhance the look. Additionally, the white light produced by halogen can also be great for use in study areas of other locations where clean white light is wanted. Halogen bulbs produce a higher quantity of light output than traditional incandescent bulbs. Since the reaction between the halogen gas and the tungsten vapor occurs at a higher temperature it produces a brighter light. The brighter lumens can be desired for many locations in the home. For example a brighter light from the same sized bulb can be used in outdoor applications such as walkway lighting or lamp posts. Because halogen bulbs produce more light for the wattage than their incandescent counterparts, they can be a more energy efficient choice for many homeowners. Although they do produce more light, they can also produce more heat during operation, so it may be helpful to place them away from items that are not heat resistant. In addition, halogen bulbs should not be handled while they are hot. If you are a homeowner who is interested in an alternative to traditional light bulbs that allows for brighter, whiter light and longer bulb life, you may want to consider using halogen bulbs in some of the fixtures and lamps in your home. They can be an economical and functional choice.
