You do not have to be concerned about getting around as there are lots of numerous sorts of public transports which will take you round the urban centre.

First on the list is Intramuros, which is located down the southern bank of the Pasig River and in the mouth of Manila Bay. It's the earliest section in the metropolis of Manila and was built by the Spaniards inside the 16th century. Intramuros in a literal sense means "within the walls" and is also surrounded by heavy, elevated walls and moats.

Next stop is Fort Santiago, which is part of the walled city. The military fortress was formed in the 16th century, which is appropriate for promenades and open air art performances. Today, it houses a variety of museums for a great number of historical artifacts from Spain's 300-year rule. A notable spot in the region is Plaza de Armas where the national hero Jose Rizal was detained before he was executed in a nearby park.

It had been ruined by a storm in 1582, gutted by flames in 1583, and significantly damaged by earthquakes in 1600, 1645, 1863, and 1880. The edifice did not have a bell tower from the last tremor till 1959. The Battle of Manila in the 2nd World War likewise wrecked parts of the cathedral.

The main facade of the cathedral features the statues of well-known saints sculpted in Roman travertine material. The cross on top of the main dome doubles as astronomical longitude reference points.

Only just a few minutes away by boat from the urban centre is Corregidor Island. Adjacent to the metropolis, the isle was once fortified to shield naval attacks from enemy warships and pirates going inland. Referred to as The Rock, Corregidor performed an crucial function throughout the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from Japan in World War II. Ruins about the island now function as a military memorial to the American, Filipino, and Japanese military who served or lost their lives there.
