Surrey, BC – Because braces can be costly, patients often find it helpful to have dental insurance to cover orthodontic costs. However, it can be difficult to know which dental insurance plan is best for orthodontic purposes and to understand what is covered, points out Dr. Aly Kanani, a Surrey invisible braces dentist. "When choosing a dental plan, it's good to get advice from your orthodontist to learn which plans he or she accepts and recommends," advises Kanani, a Surrey dental services practitioner. Orthodontic Component of Dental Insurance: "Most, but not all, dental plans include some orthodontic coverage," says Kanani, a Vancouver dentist and orthodontist. Most plans will not pay for cosmetic procedures (such as teeth whitening). Since braces are pricey and are often cosmetic, plans frequently do not reimburse braces at the same rate as they do for other dental services. However, if you're experiencing a serious health condition that can only be corrected with braces, some dental plans will pay for your orthodontic care at a higher rate. Other plans cover all orthodontic procedures with a flat rate. “When selecting a plan, also find out when your orthodontic coverage becomes available," suggests Kanani, a Vancouver braces dentist. Since insurance providers don't want patients to sign up for insurance a few months before they get braces, many plans will not provide orthodontic coverage until you have been paying into the plan for six months or more. Orthodontic Supplements: But what if your insurance plan doesn't provide orthodontic coverage? Supplemental orthodontic insurance is available. Some of the traditional dental plans provide this option, but you can purchase stand-alone plans that include only orthodontic care. Some such plans are not conventional insurance plans, but provide discounted orthodontics services. "When picking a plan, always compare the costs to the benefits," advises Kanani, a Langley invisalign expert. Some stand-alone orthodontics plans only cover 20 percent of the expenses. Ask yourself if you will come out ahead after paying the premiums. Benefits of Orthodontic Plans: Orthodontic plans provide specific advantages. They will customarily cover all of your orthodontic care, while dental plans often cap the total amount they will reimburse. In addition, notes Kanani, a Surrey orthodontist, they do not usually require a waiting period before using the benefits. "Frequently, parents and patients are worried about the cost of orthodontics services," says Kanani, a Surrey orthodontics Specialist. "Orthodontics can be expensive. However the right dental or orthodontic insurance can be a great help in offsetting the expenses. My patients are generally happy with their dental coverage.
