Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz are back on screen together in the new film Bad Teacher even if the two are not together in real life. The story line follows Diaz as Elizabeth Halsey, an alcoholic, druggie teacher who is ready to quit being a teacher and live the life of luxury married to a rich fiancé. However, when her fiancé dumps her she decides that she is going to have to get a boob job and go after a millionaire. When wealthy substitute teacher Scott shows up, played by Timberlake, she starts to take on any scam that she can in order to make money on the side to pay for her plastic surgery. Add in the fact that she has a goody two shoes co-teacher after Scott and the unattractive gym teacher Russell after her and the simple plot of landing a millionaire and getting rich gets a bit more complicated. The screenplay is written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg and much like their previous film Year One, the humor is not quite solid enough to put a finger on. Sometimes it seems that the film is meant to be dark and sarcastic, while other times it plays more like a romantic comedy. This is too bad as the quirky, ruder aspects of the film actually work out great and are honed to the skills of Diaz and Timberlake making you wish the film had just continued to run this way instead of taking a turn for the mushy at times. Add in the one liners and you get a film that will leave you rolling in the aisle ways, well, at least for half of the movie. Despite the mix up in the comedy plot, Timberlake plays a geeky new teacher excellently and Diaz is great in her usual role of sexy and crazy rolled out into one. Adding in Segel to the mix adds a bit more flavor to the cast who is quite believable and almost makes you feel just a bit sorry for him when things do not work out the way he wants. Lucy Punch is also a great addition to the cast as the squeaky clean teacher Miss Amy is intent on revealing the fact that Diaz drinks too much and does not care about teaching whatsoever. Of course, every attempt she makes to show Diaz up continues to fail making each stab even more humorous as Diaz comes out looking great and poor Miss Amy looking more hideous by the second. The soundtrack to the film is also attractive including a signature moment in the film where Punch and Diaz meet up for a silent showdown to the beat of Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio. Although teachers may bury their heads in disgust, for the rest of us the film is a great comedic feat that will have everyone wishing just a bit that Elizabeth was their high school homeroom teacher.
