Once you purchase an air compressor, it may be difficult to remember to maintain. You might use the compressor weekly, monthly, or only a few times a year. Whether your case may be, there are a few simple guidelines and tips for air compressor maintenance to keep your machine running strong for years to come. First and foremost, read your air compressor owners manual. When you first purchase your air compressor, make sure you assemble it correctly and know how each feature works. Know where your drain valve is, how to read and adjust your pressure gauge, where to hook the hose to, etc. Knowing your compressor and its features will help you determine if there is ever a problem in its operation. Also, be sure to read the warranty information. Your manual will usually tell you things you should not do with your air compressor as it will void the warranty. Using common sense, if something will void the warranty, it is probably not the safest or smartest thing to do for your machine. Before using your air compressor, be sure to inspect the hoses for any wear or cracks. If you notice any abuse to the hoses, replace them before use. A cracked or damaged hose can cause air to leak, making your air compressor inefficient and useless. Replacement hoses are inexpensive, so don't chance the use of worn ones on your air compressor as it might create further problems. Water naturally accumulates in the tank as a byproduct of the air being compressed. After every use, drain your air compressor of water. Your compressor will have a drain valve, usually near the bottom of the tank. After use, simply pull on the valve tab to release excess air and water from the tank. Your air compressor will accumulate more water if you live in a humid climate. If you forget to drain the tank before storage, the water buildup may cause the tank to rust. A rusty tank will weaken the air compressor and shorten its life. As an air compressor takes surrounding air and compresses it for use, it's important to remember to always check and clean the intake vents when necessary. If the vents are dirty or dusty, it forces the air compressor to work harder to gather air. This puts unnecessary strain on the motor and may cause the air compressor to fail. You will notice a loss in power and it will take longer for the air compressor to fill the tank. It's especially important to check and clean the intake vents frequently if the air compressor is used in a dusty workplace environment. These simple tips apply for most air compressors. Make sure you are aware of the different components of your compressor, and follow these tips to ensure a long, proper working life of your machine. No one likes to replace tools because they neglected to maintain them, so ensure that your air compressor reaches its maximum potential for all your needs so that you can accomplish the jobs at hand.
