Since the 1940s, the traditional style of refrigerator used in most American homes has been top freezer refrigerators. This refrigerator is designed so that the freezer, an entirely separate compartment from the fridge, is situated above the refrigerator at eye-level. The top freezer refrigerators replaced the earlier models, which had been around since the mid-nineteenth century. Frozen foods prior to that time were a luxury item. Top freezer refrigerators were a vast improvement over their predecessors. Earlier designs of refrigerators had freezer compartments located within the larger refrigerator. The freezer compartment was only accessed after the main fridge door had first been opened, thus allowing cold air from the refrigerator to escape. These older freezer compartments were the main cooling body of the refrigerator. The top freezer refrigerators style, which has separate doors into the divided freezer/fridge compartments, allows less cold air to be released when one or the other door is opened, thus making the units more energy efficient. Both of the units in the top freezer refrigerators have their own thermostats and operate independently from each other. Top freezer refrigerators usually include an automatic defrosting process in order to maintain operating efficiency. Older models of refrigerators, which had the freezer section installed into the fridge unit, required a lengthy, time consuming, defrosting process. The freezer/fridge had to be turned off, the food taken out, and the frost build-up removed. This process had to be done in a timely fashion as all the frozen food was defrosting somewhere in the kitchen. This frost build-up of the ice crystals does not happen in the newer models as the freezer section operates separately from the fridge compartment. In the top freezer refrigerators models, the appliance regularly defrosts the evaporator in the freezer to maintain its efficiency. Some of the earlier refrigerator models, without a large frozen food storage compartment, had a small icebox area when ice cube trays could be stored. Now, most of the top freezer refrigerators come with a fully equipped ice maker that is built into the freezer section of the refrigerator, thus eliminating the need of filling and emptying plasic ice trays. Large quantities of available ice cubes are now readily available for any event. Something that was seemingly a luxury a hundred years ago is now part of everyday living. Less expensive than the bottom freezer refrigerator or a side-by-side refrigerator, top freezer refrigerators offer better organization options and more usable space, with a capacity of up to 22 cubic feet. Standard features in the top freezer refrigerators are adjustable wire shelves, gallon door bins, and temperature controls. Also featured in most models are humidity crisper drawers and automatic moisture controls for different areas in the fridge. The standard freezer options for these types of refrigerators are automatic defrosting systems, automatic icemakers, and adjustable wire shelving. There are several color options available including fingerprint-free stainless steel. All in all, top freezer refrigerators offers a wide range of options for any economic- minded buyer that is looking.
