There has been a massive change in the way people watch home videos in the past few decades. From the late 1970s to the 1980s, there was a time when various companies producing video cassette recorders (VCRs) competed with different formats that could be widely accepted for home use. Beginning with the Betamax to VHS, then eventually to laser discs like VCDs and DVDs, newer technologies are constantly being developed to take the place of their outdated predecessors. It wasn’t just a question of system compatibility, but also with video and audio quality. With each format came a better way of enjoying home entertainment through clearer pictures and better surround sound. Newer formats also provided longer recording times and were able to store larger files, unlike previous releases. These days, Blu-ray discs are slowly taking over the market and are predicted to be DVD’s successor within a few years. However, aside from tapes and discs, the equipment used to play them has also received much development in order to accommodate newer formats. Digital video recorders (DVRs) have also risen in popularity because they enable scheduled video recording of any show and stores it in a disk drive or memory card for later viewing. However, not a lot of people have the resources to enjoy these new ways of watching movies. Blu-ray discs are quite expensive, and DVD players and DVRs are not top-priority commodities to justify unnecessary spending. Most people simply rent the movies from video stores, no longer bothering to purchase a copy. But this shouldn’t prevent people from enjoying some entertainment, because now anyone with an internet connection can stream movies online. Plenty of websites now have online video streaming, and a lot of movies are also being offered for personal viewing, often free of charge. No more getting bulky tapes or CDs or tampering with complicated digital equipment to enjoy a movie. With online video, anyone can stream movies online, so long as there is a computer with a stable internet connection available. People are now capable of doing so much for much less, and it only keeps getting better with each passing year. This only goes to show how much things have significantly changed over time. Most people would not have imagined that to stream movies online would ever be possible, and yet here it is providing entertainment to scores of people the world over.
