Computer users these days are turning to the Internet for their entertainment needs. Statistics show that there are around two billion people in the world, with more than a third of it accessing the Internet several times a week. Internet users turn to media streaming, listening to music and watching video, although music and video stores are still as competitive. The film industry is all too familiar with the advent of video streaming sites; and they are carefully considering its potential to expand the industry’s market. A number of sites have already offered their movies for online viewing, much to the convenience of those two billion souls. People are no longer confined to a cinema as they can watch movies from their computer right at the comforts of their own homes. At the same time, the film industry dislikes the idea of having the latest action flick released on the Internet before it even makes its way to the silver screen. Lawsuits involving production studios and media streaming sites are usually copyright infringements in general. The action leads to the total closure of the site, as well as payment for damages. So, why do people still watch movies online? First, it is more convenient than spending money going to a mall to watch a movie or buy a DVD. A movie ticket nowadays costs more than a value meal in a fast food chain. The same can be said for a DVD with digitally re-mastered video and audio. Although people look for ways to get the best bang for their buck, not having to spend a dime is a more pleasing option. Second, many of the movies uploaded on the Internet are rarities in a video store. Films made at the start of the 20th century are most likely not in the shelves anymore. Only a handful of film fanatics have the only copies of a particular classic. It will be too precious to auction it off. For everyone’s benefit, they rip the movie from the copy and upload it on the site. Other people watch movies online to view the rare flicks. The list of reasons can go endlessly. It is hard to deprive people of media streaming which has become one of the widely used functions of the Internet. “Watch movies online” is surely a very attractive phrase for a lot in this day and age.
