ExxonMobil released a statement on Monday stating that its efforts to clean up U.S. national heritage; The Yellowstone River have been slowed down by flooding and heavy flow of the river. US Oil giant ExxonMobil admitted on Monday that the oil pipeline leak along the Yellowstone River could widen much beyond the 10-mile stretch of the well-known waterway. The company's efforts to contain the oil spill have been greatly obstructed by the debris- filled, heavy flow of the river. Specially trained agents are occupied in cleaning up the thousands of gallons of crude oil spill from the ruptured Silvertip pipeline in Billings, Mont. The company's battle in restraining the oil spill can be observed in the implementation of 2,300 absorbent pads used to soak approximately 1,000 barrels of oil spill on late Friday. The company in its statement also was concerned about the current flooding and swift river currents as they would have to wait until the river reaches its safety level in some areas. The Yellowstone River originating in the park by the same name peaks in mid-June but generally pinnacles in middle of July due to late runoff and heavy snow. As the river is so active at this time of the year, crews are having a tough time plugging the oil spill and putting oil booms around the slick. Gary Pruessing, President of the Exxon Mobil Pipeline Company expressed his worry over the situation as the river's flow was unusual for this time of the year. As its flooding into areas which it normally doesn't, workers are not able to get into the difficult areas to clean up the spill. As the river giants up its normal course, it destroys everything in its path causing large debris like tree trunks and snags obstructing the river flow. Workers working on the oil spill are functioning in mosquito infected areas. The cause of the leak is still unknown as investigators have still not been able to reach areas where the leak has occurred. The flooding of the river is so intense that it is cornering people's yards and carrying oil slicks with it. ExxonMobil crew of approximately 125 workers is using special large pads that repel water and absorb oil. It is observed that when the water recedes, the grass is covered with shiny coat of escaped crude. Alan G. Jeffers, a spokesman for Exxon Mobil said that the testing has not shown any concern for human health with air-test monitoring showing no benzene and no hydrogen sulfide. There have been calls from residents complaining of damage to property due to oil intrusion. The pipeline met with all regulatory requirements when it was last inspected with a "smart pig," a pipeline inspection gauge in December, 2009. Recently, ExxonMobile was in the eye of controversy over its notorious oil investments in Canadian oil sands, also known as tar sands. Although the second largest oil resource in the world, it is an environmentally damaging resource due it is extensive water use, clear cutting of Boreal Forest, and the formation of massive amounts of toxic waste. ExxonMobile shareholders had asked for a disclosure on its investment in oil related sector, specifically tar sands investments. The company has dramatically diversified its oil investment plans in recent years with its stake in Imperial Oil and ExxonMobil Canada.
