For any home owner, the task of fitting an effective lighting system in the bathroom is a difficult one. It should be simple, given that the bathroom is generally a small size, but bathroom lights actually have tougher demands to meet. The fact that the air is more humid means that lights there are always susceptible to moisture damage, while strict building regulations can affect the position, size and number of lights in the room. In fact, for a bathroom to be amply lit, there needs to be a host of light types, from the central ceiling light to smaller lights over the mirror and perhaps even lights over the bath or shower, as shower curtains might otherwise cause shadowing and defeat the purpose of lighting at all. Increasingly, led lighting is being favoured for the bathroom. It may not seem logical, given that led lights are generally smaller, but their robustness is already celebrated by the fact they are used as outdoor lights in garages, parking spaces and even, as strip lights, along walls and under flora in the garden. Led lights are well known for their ability to survive more demanding roles. This is in part because of the precision in their manufacture, with their size and structure allowing for them to be more effectively insulated against the elements outside. Indoors, this advantage is not as apparent, but in a room where moisture is a major risk, they find themselves hailed once again as perfectly suited to the task. The second advantage of an led light is its efficiency, both in its consumption of energy to produce meaningful light and in its life span, which has been known to stretch beyond 50,000 hours. In fact, it is estimated that a 9.8w led light can produce the same degree of illumination as a 50w halogen light, itself an energy saving option. Its long life span means that the initial high cost at the time of purchase does not need to be met again for as long as 20 years, with an estimated payback period of just 14 months. These are all of the figures that make the led option so attractive for any room in the house. However, when speaking specifically of the bathroom the advantages are more acute. Firstly, the safety issue means that all lights in a bathroom must have the proper safety rating. This is to ensure that the electrical connections and wiring is fully protected from moisture and humidity risks. Failure can cause a short and, more seriously, electrocution. Led lights are so durable that they meet with ease all of the required regulations, though it is also essential that one checks that the specific light is compliant. Look for their IP rating, with IP44 and IP65 of particular importance. Secondly, in terms of lighting quality, led technology has come so far that it now offers a comparable brightness to any halogen or fluorescent light. The available fixtures for ceiling and wall lights can provide a morning warmth and an evening cool, allowing the home owner to awake under the shower or relax in the bath in the evening. In terms of shaving or putting on makeup, vanity lights above the bathroom mirror can cast light directly on a face, countering the shadowing effect from wall and ceiling lights behind. Even in the actual shower led lighting provides a safe option, with recessed downlights inserted into the wall or ceiling above to ensure sufficient light to properly wash oneself. It is even possible to infuse some playful colouring in the showering, or bathing, experience. It is possible, for example, to attach led lights or green or red or blue to a shower for no other reason than because one wants to. While it is true that lighting the bathroom is a different prospect to lighting any other room in the house, the challenges to be met are easily done so thanks to the array of options available. Without doubt led lights are a more than capable option as bathroom lights.
