I would like to be a cleaner for the simple fact that when I have to clean I find that I thoroughly enjoy it. This might not necessarily be the case if I had to do it all the time, but still, I’d like to find out. I love the way that I can listen to music and other recordings and so think about anything even as my body is achieving something, meaning that I am essentially being twice as productive as someone who’s task requires their mind and body. As I hoover the stairs I can be listening to Brahm’s ninth. As I wash the windows I can be having classic literature narrated to me by the soothing tones of Steven Fry. Music can free the mind to surf the unconscious like few other mediums. While smell might be the most nostalgic – we all know how a whiff of a strange odour can hurl us back into the depths of a memory we thought had been long forgotten – music via aural perception is the most powerful because we can control what we listen to. Whenever I hear Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ I can’t help but think of my first lover, but then this can be very useful if I want to choose to think about my first lover. And whenever I listen to Tom Waits I am transported back to the house that I used to share with three friends and my then girlfriend, and the tumult of memories that swell up when I do so can be close to overwhelming but always an experience. So if I were a cleaner, I could be cleaning carpets and ovens for money whilst re-living my past experiences and perhaps starting to deal with their emotional residues a bit more effectively. I would be happy as a move out cleaner, an oven cleaner or as a part of the floor cleaning team. Hoovering might be more difficult though, as the vacuum’s sounds might drown out my walkman.
