If you have a home built in the 70's or 80's, chances are you may have original wood panel walls. These walls may be worn or faded, so you might be thinking of removing them to install a new wood panel wall or drywall. Before you get started, there are some tips to consider in the removal process of your old wood panel walls. First it's important to know how your walls are built behind your wood paneling. Some wood panel walls may be installed directly to the foundation of a basement, or some may have studs behind them If you are unsure what type of wall you have, take a wood panel down using a pry bar to see what your wall consists of. This small opening will help you determine what materials you will need depending on what type of new wall you are going to install. If there are no studs and you want to install drywall, you'll know you need to get 2x4's to complete the project. After you know what is behind the original wood panel walls, set a budget and make a list of materials you will need to build your new wall. Removing your whole wood panel wall is fairly simple. Most wood panel walls are attached with glue, nails, or a combination of both. The main idea is to remove the wood panel wall without damaging what's behind it. You should start by deciding if you want to salvage the crown molding or floor trim (if there is any). To do this, take a pry bar and slowly removing the molding, making sure to place the pry bar close to where the molding is nailed. To remove the wood panel walls, you can use a pry bar, a chisel and hammer, and even a small electric saw tool. You may need to use a combination of all three depending on how the wood panel wall is attached and for different spots on the wall. It's a good idea to start at the top of each wood panel and work your way down. Just like the crown molding, remember to pry the wood panel pieces near where its nailed. When you have removed all the wood panel pieces, go over the wall again checking for and removing any stuck in nails using a hammer or pry bar. If glue was used at all in the installation of the old wood panel walls, you may need to remove any stuck on glue from the wall or studs. Sandpaper, a scraping knife, and glue remover are items to consider depending on your particular wood panel wall. When everything is smooth, you are ready to install your new wall! Although the removal of your wood panel wall is a fairly simple task, these tips may be able to help quicken your project. Don't be afraid to tackle the work yourself, as you will get the hang of it once you get started. And with any home improvement project, remember to take safety precautions such as turning off the power from the circuit breaker if working around electrical components.
