Barbados is a single island country that is located in the Lesser Antilles. It is a very small island when it comes to the landmass considering that it is only 166 square miles. The dimensions of the island include a length of 21 miles and a width of 14 miles. This country is found to be east of the Caribbean and the easternmost island of the Lesser Antilles. Englishmen with a good financial and social status were given land on the island. Plantations of cotton, tobacco, and later sugarcane became the industry of the day. In 1966 Barbados finally broke away from the British rule and became an independent nation. They have taken advantage of this by becoming the most developed island in the entire region. Today there is a population of 284,589 people on the island with about 80,000 living in the capital city, Bridgetown. As with most island nations, tourism is a big part of the economy. Although this is the case, this country does not rely solely on tourist, but has a large manufacturing market and sugarcane. The most popular sport on the island is cricket.
