The wood dowel has been around for centuries, humbly doing its job; strengthening joints. Despite many advances in construction technology, the wood dowel is still as popular today as it ever was. The answer is simply because the wood dowel is so simple itself; and the simplest solutions are almost always the best. The life of a wood dowel begins like all other wooden products; with a tree. The best types of wood to use to produce a wood dowel are beech, birch, and maple. These woods have a shorter grain, reducing the risk of cracking or splitting. In earlier times, wood was cut and turned with hand tools. Making a single wood dowel was a painstaking process; but the added strength that the wood dowel offered was worth the effort. A Wood dowel could have been used in every type of construction. From decorative items like picture frames to home furnishings like tables, chairs and bookshelves; all of these were made stronger and lasted longer thanks to that wood dowel. Even the home itself incorporated wood dowels in its construction. In Asia, builders continued to use the wood dowel in construction long after metal fasteners like nails became popular in other countries. There are different types of joints that use the wood dowel to add strength. The butt joint is probably the simplest type of joint. Two pieces of wood are joined together at a 90 degree angle. A mitered butt joint is similar to the regular butt joint; except that the wood is cut on a 45 degree angle so that no end grain is visible in the joint. The holes drilled for the dowels should be drilled at a 90 degree angle to the surface to be joined and slightly deeper than the length of the dowels to allow room for gluing. These joints can be made by hand with a drill and some careful measurements. There is also a wide array of tools like jigs that can be used to make wood dowel joints fast and easy. While the purpose and popularity of the wood dowel has not changed over the years, the methods of its manufacture have been perfected. The introduction of machine processes eliminated the need to produce wood dowels by hand, making its production faster and more precise. Machines are used to mass produce wood dowels in every size imaginable. These machines also chamfer, or taper the ends and cut one or multiple channels along the length of the dowel. A dowel is chamfered on the ends to facilitate insertion into the joint. The channels that are cut into the wood dowel are often called glue channels because they allow excess wood glue to exit the joint, reducing the risk of added pressure on the joint which could cause splitting or cracking. So, after all these years the dowel is still going strong and so are all of the joints that use the wood dowel in their construction. Despite all of the advances in the speed and precision of their production, they still do the same job for which they were originally invented and will continue to do it for years to come.
