When planning out a home improvement project it can be greatly beneficial to consider the use of a rental tool instead of one that you purchase. Specialized tasks and projects that will be done only once during the time you are living in your home are more practical to be completed with a rental tool. Using a rental tool carries several advantages such as decreasing the cost of the project and greater flexibility in the projects you can tackle. A rental tool saves money beyond the obvious yet important point of costing less initially than the purchase price of the same tool at retail. Purchasing tools and equipment requires more of an investment than the initial price. Tools need to be maintained and many power tools will eventually require repair. The cost of maintenance and repair of a rental tool lies squarely on the shoulders of the rental company. Rental companies will frequently invest in their equipment to ensure that the rental tool you select is the newest model and the best rental tool for the job. Purchasing the same equipment may run a risk of the tool being outdated or insufficient for the job when used again years after its purchase. Those types of problems are avoided when dealing with a rental tool. The flexibility of using a rental tool instead of equipment that you have purchased allows for a greater variety of a rental tool that can be used for different projects. Purchasing every tool and every piece of equipment required for all of the projects you would like to do requires a great deal of capital. Using a rental tool will allow for more frequent use of different types of tools, particularly helpful with projects that are rarely repeated or done only once. A good example of this is for flooring projects. Hardwood floors and other engineered materials usually require the boards to be nailed down. A flooring nailer can be an expensive purchase for something that will be used only once unless another room of the house is re-floored down the road. Using the nailer as a rental tool is a more practical alternative and still gives you the best tool for the job. Roofing nailers can be included in this as well, since a roof should last several years so the rental tool makes more sense. A homeowner that does a lot of DIY projects may decide to purchase a table saw for the versatility and frequency it will be used with carpentry but many projects require tasks that also require different types of saws such as miter and circular. Obtaining more specialized saws as a rental tool is a good way to supplement the tools in your workshop since they are not used nearly as often. The question of whether to use a rental tool or purchase the equipment for the long run comes down to how often you see yourself using it. Purchase the tools and equipment that you can see yourself using on a frequent basis for your home improvement projects but save the more specialized, infrequent items to be used as a rental tool.
