According to an article posted yesterday in the Norwich Evening News 24, a local hospital is planning a public campaign to help reduce superbug infections. The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital intends to start the scheme in September, and it hopes to raise awareness of the importance of good hygiene. Since April, the hospital has had four cases of MRSA and 19 cases of C. difficile. The article quotes the hospital’s Chairman, David Prior, who said: “I think it’s true that there is greater awareness than there was three years ago but it still needs more.” A meeting for the hospital’s council of governors was recently held, where Ngozi Elumogo, the Director of Infection Prevention and Control, said that the hospital still needed to do more to act against superbugs. At the meeting, the differences in protecting against infections was highlighted. For example, whilst cleaning hands with alcohol gel is effective against some infections, it is ineffective against C. difficile. A method for eradicating both MRSA and notoriously resistant C. difficile spores is to wash all laundry with the OTEX system. Developed by the commercial laundry company, JLA, OTEX utilises ozone to completely kill all bacteria and viruses. It’s this efficacy which led to it receiving the highest level 1 recommendation from the Department of Health’s Rapid Review Panel. It also validates disinfection after every wash, which will conform with upcoming health guidelines.
