Knowing that an uninterruptible power supply depends solely upon UPS batteries to function, many people wonder how long they can expect their batteries to last. There are several variables that come into play, but if you want a ballpark figure the best place to start is with the manufacturer. They should be able to give you an idea of how long it would last if run at its absolute maximum capacity and also if it were running at half of its capacity. In technical terms these ballpark figures are called full-load and half-load runtimes. Generally the half-load runtime is about three times as long as the full-load. Having this information in mind, what you really need to take into consideration when it comes to how long your battery will last is how much power is going to be needed from it. If it’s just going to be used in order to safely shutdown electronics in an efficient manner that isn’t going to take very long and won’t require a lot of power, whereas if you will be depending on your UPS until an emergency generator can kick on, it could be up to 25 minutes which would be a lot more strenuous on your battery. Once you’ve done your research and purchased a UPS system, it is important that you have it checked on a pretty routine basis. The general suggestion is that you have your system checked at least once a year, but preferably twice. This will keep you aware of how your system and its components are doing.
