The supply of tomatoes from Almeria lags behind because of cold weather. Demand also lags behind, partly because of the arrival of cold weather in large parts of Europe and partly because of the unfavourable Euro/Pound Sterling rate of exchange. At the moment mainly unpacked tomatoes are submitted. It is expected that supply will increase from the middle of November, both loose and cluster tomatoes. The prognosis of Innogreen is, that production of tomatoes in Almeria in week 46 and 47 will be higher than during 2007, but that during week 48 and 49 production will be lower than last year. In Murcia the production of tomatoes in 2008 is clearly lower than in 2007. After a decrease in week 49 and 50 an increase in production is expected in week 51. British puchasers are in general not prepared to adjust their prices, as a result of which export to the United Kingdom is difficult because of the low rate of exchange of the Pound in relation to the Euro. In order to cushion this alternative markets in Eastern Europe and Russia are sought. British customers are looking for alternative Moroccan sales organisations. The trade expects an increase in demand as soon as supply from Murcia decreases. Little change in area No meaningful changes in the tomato area east of the town of Almeria are mentioned. The area in La Canada is similar to last season, with about 70% cluster tomatoes and 30% loose. In Nijar it is about fifty-fifty between loose and cluster. The area for cherry tomatoes has decreased, but sales have also decreased. As a result it appears as if there are more sellers, but that does not have a positive effect on the development of the prices. Nevertheless there are producers, who obtain good prices, because they for instance can supply Dutch consumer organisations, who do not have sufficient product to supply the English market and therefore obtain additional product from Spain. Season 2007/'08 On the basis of particulars supplied by a number of co-ooperations the following average purchasing prices were compiled for the previous season: Loose tomatoes: ? 0,50/kg Loose cherry tomatoes: ? 1,51/kg Baby plumtomatoes: ? 1,71/kg Yellow cherry tomatoes: ? 2,10/kg Cultivation state of affairs In various locations, such as Campo Hermoso, plants suffer as a result of dark weather and the high humidity of the air. This leads amongst others to problems with a virus brought about by the white fly. In other areas, such as La Canada, there are hardly any problems because of rain and humidity, but as a result of lack of sunshine. From the Dutch point of view Almeria is the most important horticultural area, but Murcia is also very important. Apart from lettuce and broccoli it also produces tomatoes and peppers. Problems are being mentioned, especially in the lettuce and tomato cultivation. The proceeds are disappointing, whilst growers are involved with increases in expenses. Some tomato companies moved their production to Morocco. Others may have sold their property already to project developers, provided the property market in Murcia had remained strong, but at the moment it is not worth talking about.
