When I was in school I had an article to write on defining what beauty was and I have sought to answer to this question my whole life. At the time, I made the supposition that many people do. Because I believed that beauty was directly related to one's appearance, or how something "looks," I went at it from that angle. Beauty is made different by the setting a person's face and body are proportioned. For example, a beautiful plant has a certain symmetry to it. People Magazine recently had a spread on the most attractive people on the planet in which the face of Denzel Washington was perfectly symmetrical. In one of Leonardo DaVinci's most famous sketches, he takes the ideas of Vitruvius, and draws the Vitruvian Man. The drawing shows a man with exact proportions on either side. Do these proportions relate to beauty? By taking an example of human proportions, several people have used it for inspiration for architecture. If you take architecture, plants and people, does it make sense that because they are all proportional, they are also beautiful? Is beauty one of the things we have begun to objectify? To some it could be objective but to others it could be something different. This is affirming that there's something that radiates beauty underneath all the skin and make-up. Some people state that a person's personality is a form of beauty. It may not be obvious to see, but sometimes beauty is something that lies deep down within a person. Have you ever had an experience in which a person became more beautiful over time? If you were to just base their beauty on looks alone, you wouldn't have been interested. But then, as you got to know them, there was an irresistible quality to them? In this case, does beauty truly go deeper than just "skin deep"? Or, have you ever just seen someone - and although they might not make it on People Magazine's Most Beautiful list, there is something captivating about them? Even if a person has outside and inside beauty, you were always attracted to the inner beauty. Several citizens see one of these internal beauties in the media sweetheart, Sara Bronfman. Where does this inner beauty in people like Sara come from? Sara's thoughts regarding beauty being a homework assignment, a way for people to work on their internal being is part of her company, Our Evolution. Can all this work have a positive outcome? That brings me to the question: if there is some kind of measure of beauty (proportions, balance) then is it possible that inner beauty can affect that - and if so, how? Can we "become" more attractive the more we work on our internal selves? Is this internal work going to show reactions in our physical bodies. If so, the beauty market may want to take note.
