People send their children to boarding institution for many reasons. The parents may need to travel a lot, making boarding school environment a better alternative to leaving the children at home or with a relative. Some children fare better in a boarding institutional environment than they did in a traditional public school because class sizes are smaller, programs are more varied, and more accommodations are made for children who have other needs. One thing's for sure, it's important to find the perfect boarding institution for your child. One that would meet his/her needs best. Here are a few things that you should consider when trying to find boarding school: 1. Coed or single sex? - Different people have different opinions about whether it's better to send your child to a coeducational boarding institution or to a single sex school. Coed schools help your child interact with young people from the opposite sex. Undoubtedly, there would be valuable life lessons learned from this kind of interaction. Some parents, on the other hand, prefer single sex schools because the distraction would be kept at a minimum and boys and girls can learn with their own specific learning styles. 2. Religious or non-sectarian? - Some parents firmly believe that learning about religion is an integral part of a holistic education. Some firmly believe in the benefits of a non-sectarian education. It all boils down to personal preference. There are good religious boarding schools and equally good non-sectarian schools. 3. Small class sizes - One of the main benefits of a private boarding school education is the fact that class sizes are small and teachers know the students better because of this. There are less chances of a student going unnoticed by his/her teachers, and educators are more invested in the learning of their students. A typical private boarding school would have class sizes anywhere from 4 students to 15. Public school class sizes can go up to the 40's and above. 4. More funds - Public schools tend to go through a lot of processes in order for funds to be approved, and it's usually not an easy thing to accomplish because several public schools in a district will need to fight over limited funds. Private schools are privately funded, can increase their tuition fees when needed, and need not go through a long system to have requests for new or improved facilities to be approved. Private schools usually have better facilities and programs because more funds are available to be used. 5. Safety - One other thing to consider is how safe the boarding institution is for your child. If you're looking for a boarding school, make sure there's a hospital nearby and ask what the usual response time is for different types of emergencies. Most private boarding schools provide excellent protection for students and do their best to make the campus as safe and healthy as possible. Since the school acts in loco parentis (in the place of the parents) when children are in boarding school, most of them have proper precautions and protocols in place to make the experience as safe and enriching for your child.
