As a beginning, it needs to be made clear how the red laser pointer differs from the rest lasers at a technology level. Basically, all lasers have exactly the same mechanism: what they do is use the electricity which comes from the battery so as to evolve light waves of a particular length. The only difference between a red laser pointer and a green laser pointer, for example, is the length of waves which they evolve. That’s right! Perhaps, you remember some of the physics lessons you had when you were a tenth grader. It is the length of the light wave that determines the color we see. So it can be concluded that a red laser pointer evolves light waves whose length is different from the light waves evolved by a green laser pointer. You want figures?! Though it is not that important, you may find it interesting that a red laser pointer evolves light waves whose length is around 650 nanometers, and a green laser’s light waves’ length is around 500 nanometers! Anyway, let’s try to get back to the question from the very beginning: does a red laser pointer differ from the others? Why is it so preferred over the green or blue lasers for example? The truth is that there are several reasons for that. The first one, without a shade of doubt, is the fact that the first lasers which were launched on to the market several decades ago had a red beam. It was many years until green or blue lasers were launched on to the market. So people kind of got used to the idea that a laser pointer’s beam should be red. That is why they usually go for a red laser pointer unless the laser is needed for a particular appliance such as for an SOS tool for example. Blue or violet lasers are usually preferred by climbers and mountaineers who may need them to send an SOS in case of danger. A red laser pointer is usually chosen by lecturers and teachers who use them to show pictures or text on the large screen. In all other cases, it does not matter what kind of laser will be used. People seem to be choosing the red laser pointer just because they have gotten used to it, and associate the good-quality laser with a red laser pointer. They take the other lasers pretty much as a “fad”, which is not really needed.
