An air conditioner is a wonderful convenience, especially during the sweltering summer months. You never realize how much you rely on your air conditioner until it stops working or doesn't work efficiently. While air conditioners will last for many years, they need regular maintenance in order to do so. However, if you experience problems, there are a few common causes you may be able to fix on your own before you need to call in the repairman. One common problem is an air conditioner that functions inefficiently. If you've noticed higher energy bills than usual, this could be the case. An inefficient air conditioner is often the result of a clogged air filter. Your air conditioner pulls in air from outside and sends it through the filter before it circulates through the home. The filter stops the outside dirt and dust from entering your home. You should change your filter every three to six months in order to experience maximum efficiency. You can purchase a filter at any home improvement store. Just make sure to note the size of your filter or your old filter with you to correctly match. Another common problem is when the air conditioner is without power. This can be the result of a thrown circuit breaker or blown fuse. If this happens only once you should be ok. But if it happens more than once, it's an electrical problem and you should call in an air conditioning specialist with electrical experience. The best way to keep your heating and cooling systems working correctly is to make sure they are serviced regularly.
