A bathroom remodel can be a very rewarding, but also very daunting task. Building a new bathroom can be equally daunting, as there are many things to consider when designing a bathroom that are not a problem when designing other parts of a home. Bathrooms require hot and cold water, sewage draining, electricity, a toilet, a sink, and usually a bath or shower enclosure. One important bathroom feature that is often neglected is the installation of bathroom lights. Installing bathroom lights should never be left as an afterthought. Proper planning of bathroom lights from the beginning stages of bathroom design is vital to a successful remodel or new build. When planning the layout of all the bathroom elements, bathroom lights should be included to ensure you will have light where you need it. Just as you draw where the tub or sink will be placed, you should also draw where you plan your bathroom lights to be. Installing bathroom lights toward the end of a remodel or new build will make the installation much more difficult and time consuming, and will typically result in a less ideal bathroom. Once the plan is complete and you know where you want your bathroom lights, it is important to ensure you have electricity available. Most bathroom lights use standard 110 volt AC household power, so special circuits are not typically required. However, if you plan to put bathroom lights inside the tub or shower area where water and moisture are prevalent, it would be advisable to utilize a ground fault protected circuit for your bathroom lights. A ground fault protected circuit will protect you and your family from shock if water gets into your bathroom lights by tripping the power upon a detected ground fault. If a ground fault protected circuit is needed, you will certainly want to consult a professional electrician for help in installing your bathroom lights. If existing wiring cannot be used, it will probably be necessary to run new wiring inside the bathroom wall. This is another reason that planning your bathroom lights early in the design phase is vital, as cutting through a tiled wall is much more difficult than cutting and patching drywall! Not only do your bathroom lights need power, but if you want to turn them on and off conveniently they will also require a wall switch. Again, it will probably be beneficial to consult a professional electrician if new wiring and/or switches need to be installed. Once you have the locations for your bathroom lights selected and all the switches and wiring you need, you will need to select the bathroom lights that fit the design and style of your bathroom. Mounting instructions vary widely with the type of bathroom lights available, but most fixtures come with detailed mounting instructions that even a beginner can follow. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's mounting instructions accurately. Once your fixtures are mounted you can re-energize the electrical circuit and test your lights and switches, then move on to the rest of your remodel or build.
