It is not uncommon to go into a home or office and see multiple lamps and shades. Most common today are floor, desk and table-top mounted lamps and shades which can be made from several different types of material. Although lamps and shades are very useful for lighting an area, they are also used for their decorative and design alternatives. Lamp shades are perfect for going over the bulb in a lamp and diffusing the light that is being emitted to create a warm glow in any space, thus making it more inviting. There are several types of lamps and shades available. One of these that can be found in most homes and offices today is empire shades. They are known for their round shape and straight sloping sides. They usually consist of silk or some other fabric and the linings are soft and sewn in by hand. These linings are secured to the frame, which is usually constructed of metal. Another type of lamps and shades is the vintage type. The word vintage is known to cover a large variety of lamps and shades and generally refers to something that is old, or no longer being produced. When you hear the word vintage you may think of something that is old and highly priced, but many of these lamps are actually reasonably priced. The value of these vintage pieces is often simply decided by the amount of money offered by someone who wants to own it. A great place to find these vintage pieces is to go directly to antique dealers or thrift shops. Most consumers are aware of the most well-known and famous lamps and shades styles that are known as Tiffany. Tiffany's lamps and shades come in many different variations, but all have glass shades that are known for their beautiful stained glass artwork. They are so intricately put together that they take your breath away and can be a great conversation piece in your front room when you are entertaining guests. Tiffany pieces are made by hand using a method known as Copper Foil. The last style that will be mentioned is the mission style of lamps and shades and this type was made famous by Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This style groups a number of different methods of design together and is known today as the Prairie School of Design. These lamps and shades are known for their simple production and a variety of colors and designs that they offer. It is truly amazing how a room or office can be transformed through a single aspect of lighting. Although lamps are made with very specific purposes in mind, decoration and creativity are another function of their use today. Lamp shades for table lamps are sold in hundreds of sizes, shapes, and colors to meet any need and by learning about all the different types and styles on the market you will be well equipped to find the perfect match of lamps and shades for your home or office.
