Sufficient deck lighting can increase the amount of time available to socialize, entertain, and relax on your deck. Deck lighting contributes to the overall ambience of the deck and provides additional safety through improved visibility. Deck lighting is most commonly found in solar powered or low voltage options and can be installed in a variety of locations around and in the deck. One increasingly popular form of deck lighting is that of using solar powered lights. Solar powered deck lighting can have an initial expense that is higher than other forms but this cost is compensated for by the lack of continued energy costs associated with its use. Solar lights are very versatile as well, able to be positioned in a variety of locations due to their low installation requirements. Another option for deck lighting that provides a lower cost to operate than traditional, electric powered types is low voltage lighting. Low voltage deck lighting is usually less expensive to purchase than solar powered lights but does come with operating costs, albeit costs that are lower than traditional forms of deck lighting. Both solar and low voltage deck lighting provide similar amounts of subdued, ambient light that is well suited for a deck. While deck lighting does not need to be overwhelmingly bright, there needs to be a sufficient amount of light to provide visibility to avoid safety hazards of unseen risks to trip over or stumble into. Strategic placing of the solar or low voltage lights will provide adequate lighting to light the entire deck while maintaining the desired amounts of subtlety. Deck lighting can be placed either atop or at the base of the posts, providing differing effects of illumination. Recessed deck lighting is a strong option for use in stairways and pathways, contributing to the safety of being able to see where you are walking. Arranging the deck lighting does not need to be overly complicated but still requires some planning in advance. It is a good idea to work up a sketch of the entire deck and use that drawing to determine where you would like the lights to be placed and which types and styles you would prefer to use. Using a sketch of the deck can also assist you in figuring out how much wiring might be required if the plan calls for electrically powered deck lighting. Deck lighting is just as important as indoor lighting and when it is configured correctly it can extend the amount of hours you are able to use your deck as well as providing an ambient atmosphere that is well suited for entertaining and relaxing. Use good quality light fixtures as they need to endure a mixture of weather conditions that can be quite harsh. If you have chosen to use electrical deck lighting it is important to install them correctly, which may require the aid of an electrician. Your local home improvement store can give further advice and assistance to help you select the best deck lighting to suit your needs.
