Deck lighting is often the final piece of the puzzle when putting together an outdoor deck. Sufficient deck lighting allows you to use the deck into the evening or night without resorting to flashlights. Deck lighting not only provides the safety of being able to see where you are going when it is dark but can also contribute to ambience and overall experience of the outdoor deck. Here are few of the main deck lighting options available. Many decks are surrounded by a railing with posts that can make for an excellent location for deck lighting. Installing a lamp on the corner posts that surround the deck is known as post cap lighting. This form of deck lighting strikes a good balance between providing adequate light for safety and creating ambience. The posts along the edge of the deck can be used for deck lighting not just up top but also at the bottom. Post base lighting installs lights at the base of the posts and provides a soft light along the perimeter of the deck while emanating brightly inside the deck, particularly at sitting levels and across the ground while walking. The lights can be installed on every post or alternating posts depending on what kind, and how much, deck lighting you intend to provide. Pathway lights are another form of deck lighting that make a lot of sense from a safety perspective. Lighting pathways or stairways with pathway lights can also be used to accentuate parts of the deck or the backyard through strategic placement. For a type of deck lighting that is a little bit different you can consider using rope lights. Rope lights use water resistant, flexible plastic tubing that encase a string of LEDs. You plug the rope light into the wall and simply attach the tubing wherever you'd like with the enclosed clips. Deck lighting is not limited to options that require electricity. Oil tiki torches are an inexpensive alternative that can add a different style to the deck and backyard. Typically made of bamboo, they contain a refillable fuel canister and the oil often comes with the additional benefit of acting as a mosquito repellent while contributing to the deck lighting. While the sun lights the deck during the day, you can also use these hours to power the deck lighting itself. Solar lights are available that can use a photocell to store the sun's energy and automatically convert it to light when the sky darkens, requiring no electricity and little effort on your part. While usually costing more initially, solar deck lighting can be a cost saver on energy in the long run. As you can see, deck lighting is available in a variety of different types that serves a similar purpose in unique ways. Whether installing the deck lighting along the posts of the deck itself or using less traditional methods to light the area such as tiki torches, you are sure to find a style of deck lighting that will accommodate your specific needs.
