Bath lighting is an important aspect to consider when renovating your bathroom. Proper bath lighting not only improves the aesthetic value of the room but can have a positive impact on your mood. Improper lighting with excessive shadows or a lack of brightness can be a problem and there are a few things to consider when setting up bath lighting. With the bathroom being the room where you usually first see yourself to start the day and also the last place you see your reflection before going to bed, bath lighting shouldn't be overlooked. The type of bath lighting most often encountered is a single light source, usually directly above the mirror. While simplistic, this doesn't present the most flattering view and ignores what's possible with effective bath lighting. To achieve more balance and flexibility in the bathroom, the bath lighting should be layered and take advantage of these four types of light: task, ambient, accent and decorative lighting. Task lighting provides light without shadows through cross illumination. This type of bath lighting usually involves a light fixture on both sides of the sink and is well suited for the everyday tasks that take place at the sink and mirror such as shaving and makeup application. This is often where bath lighting ends but the other three types can take the bathroom to another level. Ambient lighting bounces light off the ceiling which has the effect of softening shadows. This form of bath lighting can bring a nice side effect of taking a few years off your appearance in the mirror with the softer light. Accent lighting is more focused on the room itself, drawing attention to specific features or decorative items through focused placement and angling of light fixtures. Examples of this would be a piece of artwork on the wall or a plant. Decorative bath lighting is fairly self explanatory in that the lighting fixture itself is meant to add to the aesthetics of the bathroom and add some luxury to the room. Bath lighting can be enhanced through other areas as well. The bathroom is used for a variety of purposes and each one doesn't require the same lighting setup. Bath lighting can be adjusted through dimmers, allowing for a softer glow that can provide added relaxation to a soothing bath. Setting up the fixtures in specific zones that can be controlled individually can help keep the bath lighting versatile. The bath lighting around the sink and mirrors can be used in the morning while getting ready while the entire room would be more likely to need illumination during more routine trips to the bathroom. Effective bath lighting can greatly improve the overall value of the bathroom. When remodeling the room, it can be helpful to consult a lighting designer at your local home improvement store or learning more about proper placement while shopping online. The best bath lighting will effectively marry form and function, expanding beyond the familiarity of a single light above the mirror to a full bathroom lighting experience.
