Adequate bath lighting is important for safety, setting the intended atmosphere and to improve the overall aesthetic quality of the bathroom. It is the room in which you prepare yourself to greet the day and is often the last stop before going to bed. Effective bath lighting can also help provide relaxation when using the bathroom to soothe and calm yourself after a long day. Here are some ideas to help enhance the bath lighting in one of the most important rooms in your house. Much of the activity in the bathroom is focused around the mirror and sink. The bath lighting that best benefits the routines we go through to start the day is known as task lighting. The goal of task lighting is to provide full illumination with minimal shadows and glare, giving the best view of your face while you perform tasks such as shaving and applying makeup. Bath lighting around the mirror is best accomplished by installing a fixture on both sides of the mirror, providing cross illumination. Since space does not always allow for fixtures to flank the mirror, task bath lighting can also be accomplished effectively by installing the lighting fixtures directly above the mirror. The shower is another area that greatly benefits from proper bath lighting. Recessed lighting fixtures are a good choice for the shower to provide lighting with a focus on safety. The fixtures used for bath lighting in the shower should be designed for use around water; your local home improvement store can provide information on which fixtures are vapor-proof. General bath lighting can be provided by installing an overhead fixture in the room. This can be used to complement the other light sources, filling the room with additional light. This can also be achieved through a decorative light fixture such as wall sconces and chandeliers. Using a decorative fixture to add to the bath lighting can add a touch of elegance to the room while complementing the task and recessed lighting already installed. A table lamp is another option to consider for decorative bath lighting, as long as it is placed away from water sources. Other ideas to help improve your bath lighting include installing dimmer switches. These can help you control the lighting in the room, allowing a softer glow for baths or other times when a fully lit room is not necessary. Dimmer switches also save energy and are a good investment for not only the bathroom but every room in the house. The bath lighting can also be maximized by avoiding using dark colors in the room as they absorb light quicker. Reflective bath lighting can add another element to the room through the use of larger mirrors or strategic placement and angling of light fixtures. Reducing the amount of clutter in the bathroom will improve the bath lighting as well, giving the light fewer obstacles to bounce off of. Finally, using glass containers can be another way to improve the bath lighting. Using all or some of these ideas while remodeling the bathroom will help provide the most effective bath lighting.
