Bath lighting is often given inadequate attention when remodeling a home yet it can make a big difference in such a frequently used room. The task of bath lighting is often left to a single light fixture either above the mirror or in the center of the ceiling but this falls short of what can be achieved. Proper bath lighting is best achieved through the layering of light. A series of layers can help provide ample bath lighting for specific tasks such as applying makeup while also enhances the atmospheric mood of the bathroom overall. Task lighting is intended for a specific purpose in bath lighting. Vanity lighting is the most prevalent example of this and often is the only consideration made when lighting the bathroom. The most effective vanity bath lighting will illuminate the face without casting shadows or glares. This is best accomplished by flanking the mirror with light fixtures at approximately the same height as your head to best cast the light across your face from both sides. Another prime example of task bath lighting is with the shower or bathtub. Unlike the external fixtures that are used for vanity lighting, the best choice for task bath lighting is recessed lighting. Bath lighting that is recessed becomes a part of the architecture, housed inside the wall, and should use water resistant materials if installed near the bath or shower. A dedicated light source for the bath or shower may not be necessary if it uses a clear glass door as that should allow adequate light to enter from the rest of the room. Ambient bath lighting can be used as a sort of fill-in for the rest of the bathroom and often serves as a substitute for natural light in the absence of windows or skylights. While the ambient bath lighting is usually provided by a centralized fixture, it can also be accomplished through strategically placing and angling smaller light fixtures in the room. Ambient bath lighting can also be provided by a decorative light fixture which can also add another element of elegance to the bathroom. Bath lighting can also be enhanced through accent lighting. This serves the specific purpose of shining a direct light on a particular point in the bathroom you wish to accent, such as a piece of artwork or decorative tile. Two more factors that influence how you can layer the bath lighting are which type of bulb you use and the installation of dimmer switches. A sharp, white light is the best for revealing your skin tones most precisely. A good source of white light for bath lighting is through a halogen bulb. While they tend to cost a little more than standard incandescent bulbs they can last up to three times longer. Dimmer switches can increase the energy efficiency of the bathroom while providing direct control of the bath lighting itself. The ability to specifically control the ambient or accent bath lighting of the room through dimmer switches will extend the life of the bulbs while contributing to the increased aesthetic value of the bathroom.
