Lamps and shades go hand in hand and are made to accent any room in your house. Shades are placed on top of lamps to disperse the bright light cast by light bulbs and to create a pleasing piece of furniture to add to your home. Choosing which lamps fit with which shades can be tricky, but if you follow a few tricks and tips, you will have your selections narrowed down in no time. Lamps and shades come in a wide variety of styles, shapes, colors and designs, and you can use them to create more visual space to work with in a room. Changing or adding lamps and shades to a room can reinvent the area and freshen up the theme and style. Most lamps and shades are interchangeable and can be switched out whenever, offering versatility to their owners and allowing easy options for decorating for parties, seasons or events. Choosing the right pair of lamps and shades is crucial and mismatched pieces can ruin the overall design of a room. In order to make sure your lamps and shades fit well together, you will need to take a few measurements. With a tape measure in hand, measure the height and diameter of your lamp from base to the top. Next, make sure the lamp shade you have chosen measures at the bottom within the top two inches of the base of the lamp. Tall and thick lamp bases look best when topped off with wide lamp shades and short and skinny bases need proportionally matched shades as well. You do not want your lamps and shades to look out of place or mismatched, so pay attention to proportion and stand back and look at them from different angles. Study the shape of the base of the lamp and pair it up with a shade that will compliment it. Novelty lamps look best when paired with plain, simple square or cylindrical shaped shades. This keeps the focus on the uniquely shaped base instead of overwhelming the area with too much to look at. Regular and ordinarily shaped bases can be topped off with odd shaped shades with bright colors or designed fabrics. This gives depth and dimension to an otherwise boring piece. Color is also important to be aware of and the color of the lamps and shades you choose should match each other and the room around them. Pay attention to the shapes and colors of your lamps and shades and be sure that they do not look to busy or overworked. Next you should decide if the lamps and shades you are focusing on are meant to be used as a primary light source for the room. If they are, you should keep the shade simple and clean looking to be sure that it gives off the maximum amount of light. If these lamps and shades are meant for decoration, feel free to use ornate designs, metal or animal hide shades. Choosing the right shade to go with a lamp base is simple if you keep in mind proportion, color and style. Make sure that the lamps and shades you choose balance each other out and do not over power the look of a room.
