When you walk into clothing or shoe store, you may have heard a little bell ring that announces that you have entered, but did you know that it was connected to a motion sensor? Perhaps you thought it rang because you stepped on the mat or simply because the door opened. More likely, a motion sensor that used a photo sensor detected that the amount of light changed as you walked through the beam and sent the signal to ring the bell. This is an example of an active motion sensor. Another type of active motion sensor uses microwave energy to detect motion. This is the type that opens that grocery store door magically as you approach it. Another similar type of motion sensor sends out sound waves that bounce off a specified target and echo back, and when the echo changes, a signal is sent to the alarm of the motion sensor. Most lighting and security systems used in homes and businesses use a passive motion sensor system that looks at infrared energy, and are often known as passive infrared or PIR detectors. These motion sensor units are designed to measure or sense human body temperature. The wavelength that a human radiates is somewhere between 9 and 10 micrometers, so this type of motion sensor is designed with a sensitivity in the 8 to 12 micrometer range. If you have seen a motion sensor light, then you have noticed that the light reacts to motion, but not to someone who stands still. The reason for this is that the motion sensor is looking for a fast change in the amount of detected infrared energy. If someone were to walk by, the energy amount changes quickly and can be detected easily. Once this change in energy is detected by the motion sensor, a signal is sent to the light to turn it on; allowing you to see what has caused this rapid change. You can get a motion sensor with a range of 180 degrees, or even 360 degrees as far as the field of view is concerned. This range is determined by the lens that covers the motion sensor. Because infrared is a form of light, it can be focused and bent by using plastic lenses. Depending on the range you need to have covered, you will definitely want to check the range of the field of view before you purchase any motion sensor. The nice thing is that you will have a great selection of different motion sensor units that will be available to you when you are ready to make your purchases. You can find models with different types of lights that give you a traditional look that blends in with the rest of your outdoor lighting, or you can get more modern looking spotlights or security lights. No matter which type of motion sensor light you choose, you can be assured that you are taking security measures to help keep your family safe and to assure your peace of mind.
