If you have a problem with family members leaving lights on in their rooms or in any room of the house, then you could definitely benefit from an occupancy motion sensor. Perhaps you have only thought about a motion sensor in the context of an outside light turning on at night when it detects movement. Although this is a very popular use of a motion sensor, the occupancy motion sensor is becoming much more popular in this age when people are trying to be energy conscious. The basic type of occupancy motion sensor is designed to turn off the lights when the room has not been occupied for at least ten minutes. It uses PIR, or passive infrared technology to determine if there is movement. Basically, if the motion sensor detects changes in the infrared levels in the room, it will know the room is occupied. As people move about, the infrared levels will change and the motion sensor will know that the area has people in it. However, if there is no infrared energy change or flux for at least ten minutes, then the motion sensor, which is attached to the lighting in the room, will switch off the lights. This can save a tremendous amount of energy, because there are many times that people leave a room for a period of time, and because they think they are coming right back, they won't turn off the light. Often, things distract them and they don't return to the room for a longer period of time than they planned and the light simply stays on, using energy. By using an occupancy motion sensor, you won't have to worry about whether lights have been switched off, you will simply know that your motion sensor system will take care of itself and all the lights in unoccupied rooms will have been switched off automatically. You can get these motion sensor units with the ability to turn lights on when people enter the room as well as turning them off. If you prefer, you can get the type with a dedicated switch for turning on the lights, and the motion sensor simply determines when to switch the lights off. These are great for rooms such as the garage, hallway, bathroom and kitchen. You can also get occupancy motion sensor models that turn off ceiling fans and stereo equipment in addition to the actual lights. There are additional features that you may appreciate on an occupancy motion sensor. Some come with the option for you to program a time when you want the lights to turn off if they are not already off, in addition to the auto-on that allows the motion sensor to turn the lights on as you enter a room. This is a great feature when your hands are full. As you can see, a motion sensor is not simply for outdoor use, but can really save you energy when used inside the home. Use a motion sensor to help you when your family members forget to turn off the lights when they leave a room.
