Lighting is an essential part of designing a comfortable and efficient home. The installation of fashionable, energy efficient and well-placed lights greatly impact the overall look and feeling of the home, as well as the impression that it gives to visitors and guests. An overly bright house can have an impersonal quality that comes off somewhat similar to hospital or other industrial building. A house that is too dark can seem small, filthy, and can even pose certain safety hazards. If you are in the process of creating a home with a balanced lighting scheme, recessed lights may be a good option to help you achieve your goals in creating the perfect ambiance. Recessed lights come in many different shapes and sizes. They are differentiated from other types of lights because recessed lights, once installed, are unobtrusive, meaning that they are embedded in the ceiling, walls, or floor. Commonly, recessed lights in schools or other buildings use fluorescent, tube bulbs. Recessed lights can be very different from this in homes. They can use LED bulbs, halogen bulbs, low voltage bulbs, and many other varieties. Recessed lights can be nearly any shape, some of the most common being rectangular, square, or circular. One of the most common and useful implementations of recessed lights are in homes or rooms with low ceilings. Many homes have ceilings above eight feet. If the ceilings are shorter than that, recessed lights are highly recommended. When installed in a room with low ceilings, recessed lights can brighten the room and make it seem much larger. Another way to increase the appeal of a room with low ceilings is by using mirrors to ornament the room. This creates a much more spacious look. In addition to their useful application in rooms with low ceilings, recessed lights are also wonderful additions to rooms with regular or vaulted ceilings. These lights are useful for providing general light to the room, or they can be focused so that they highlight a specific area such as an artistic mantle display or a food preparation area in the kitchen. Although recessed lights are somewhat inconspicuous, they are not without character. Many recessed lights have decorative molding made out of bronze, stainless steel, or other material. Like other lighting elements, recessed lights can be used to compliment other appliances, fixtures, or furniture. The installation of recessed lights can be somewhat involved if they are being used as part of remodeling an existing room or home, nevertheless they have very little upkeep or maintenance in the future. Unlike many other types of lights, recessed lights are very unlikely to collect dirt or dust and, therefore, do not need to be cleaned nearly as often. It is relatively simple to change a light bulb for recessed lights. An electrician is often hired to perform the installation of recessed lights, although there are kits and tools designed to aid homeowners in performing the work their selves. The aesthetic qualities as well as functionality of these lights make them an enticing option for modern homes.
