Using proper tools for a job can save a great deal of time and money. If you have ever attempted to change a tire without a jack or change a light fixture without a screwdriver, you can attest to the importance of having high quality equipment that is tailored to the specific job. Roto hammers are not tools that are found in every shed, but they are very useful when used within their scope of practice. Roto hammers can be large or small; although they are often compared to hammer drills or jack hammers, they are not the same thing. Although roto hammers look similar to hammer drills, they are useful for different types of work. While hammer drills can also be used to drill holes in concrete, there are some jobs in which the use of roto hammers would be more suitable for the task. Hammer drills are very effective for drilling holes that are less than an inch in diameter in concrete blocks or brick, whereas roto hammers are used for drilling holes that are larger than a half inch. Roto hammers are also capable of drilling through more solid materials such as poured concrete foundations. A basic description of the difference between hammer drills and roto hammers is that hammer drills use quick, sharp repetition and less force to chip away at a surface, while roto hammers use a much stronger impact. There are different types of roto hammers available. Many roto hammers have a drilling or rotational capability as well as hammering action. In some roto hammers, neither of these motions can be disengaged. There are also roto hammers that allow hammering to be done without the rotation of the bit so that they can be used to chisel certain detailing. It is also possible to find models that are functional as regular drills because the hammer action can be ceased. Either of these functions can make a roto hammer more versatile in it usage. Roto hammers are formatted to be sturdier than many other types of drill or hammer. They use specially formulated bits that are designed to be strong enough to withstand the pounding as they drill holes in concrete. Generally, bits for roto hammers are made from a composite steel or carbide. They are even stronger than bits that are used in other types of drills and are therefore effective in pulverizing concrete without breaking or becoming compromised. Different bits are appropriate for different jobs. There are even bits that can be used for roto hammers that allow them to cut through certain types of metal. Of course, with time and intense pressure, any material will begin to break down. That is why it is necessary to use roto hammers and bits for their intended purpose as well as replace the bits when you notice that they have become less effective. When you need a machine that will cut into masonry or concrete cleanly and with precision, roto hammers are some of the best tools for the job.
