Rotary hammers, also known as roto hammers, are designed for drilling holes into solid concrete. They are similar to hammer drills but roto hammers pack more punch. Specialized bits are available specifically for concrete drilling. While these bits could be fitted with standard drills, they are not enough to take regular drills to the next level to get the job done. Instead, using the bits with roto hammers will get the job done quickly and without the possibility of destroying your standard drills by taxing them beyond capacity. The concrete gets obliterated by roto hammers by pounding the bit into the concrete as the bit spins, thus clearing the way for the bit to advance further and continue drilling. Breaking the concrete into such small pieces is an important aspect of roto hammers to clear the necessary room. The hard concrete will otherwise damage the bit and cause a great deal of strain on ordinary drills that do not fully pulverize the concrete thanks to the drill's comparatively weak motor. Roto hammers use compressed air generated from internal pistons to pound the concrete with the bit. This piston powered pounding force of rotary hammers is greater than drill hammers that rely on clutches constructed from metal disks. The increased power of roto hammers over hammer drills is evident when using both tools to drill the same sized hole. A task that takes hammer drills thirty seconds will take roto hammers only four to five seconds to complete. Roto hammers would be overkill when used for casual, household use but their increased power is a great benefit for more frequent use. Additionally, roto hammers have greater shock absorbing capabilities than drill hammers do. Roto hammers often can be used as three different tools through changing the settings. In addition to the rotary hammer function, the roto hammers can be switched to use either just the hammer function or the rotary, which is the drill. Having the three functions available allows roto hammers to be used for a wider variety of tasks. The isolated drill function allows roto hammers to create holes in other materials beyond concrete such as wood or steel. Isolating the hammer function not only allows the tool to perform the functions of a regular hammer but through using special attachments, roto hammers can also be used for chipping and chiseling. Most roto hammers are corded models, providing an efficient energy source for the high energy requirements of the pistons. There are, however, cordless models as well so ultimately the decision to use a corded or cordless model is matter of personal preference. As you can see, roto hammers are a vital tool when serious drilling needs to be made into concrete.
