If you have a favorite chair where you love to read, but there is not room for a table or floor lamp near it, you may want to consider swing arm lamps as an option to get the light you are looking for. In many rooms, it is just not easy to use table or floor lamps and ceiling lamps often provide a harsher light than you would like if one person is just sitting there quietly reading. Swing arm lamps offer a great alternative to other traditional lamps. If you have never heard about swing arm lamps, you may equate them with the type of lamp that your dentist uses to see all of your teeth. That light is actually designed on a similar principle. Swing arm lamps are attached to the wall and then have two arms, often one arm swivels out from the wall and the other swivels out from the joint of the arms. This gives you quite a bit of versatility when it comes to placing the actual light source. Swing arm lamps can really add to the ambience of a room depending on how you use them. They can be used in a living room or a family room. A very popular location for swing arm lamps is the bedroom. Many bedrooms are small, and if there are end tables at the side of the bed, they are small and a table lamp would simply take up all of the available space. Floor lamps may take up too much room, and may put out too much light if one partner wants to read while the other one sleeps. Swing arm lamps can solve these problems by being able to swing them out of the way when you are not using them, you can tuck them against the wall until you are ready to read that book. Another feature that makes swing arm lamps so popular for use in the bedroom is the fact that most of them are considered 3-way lamps. Using a 150 watt 3-way bulb, you can set the light low, medium, or high, depending on your needs. When reading in bed, you might find that the low setting, at about 50 watts is just perfect to allow you to read and your partner to stay asleep. As with most lamps, you can find swing arm lamps in a variety of styles and colors. You can go for the very small styles for a little reading nook in the living room, or you can go for the swing arm lamps with the larger shades to provide light on either side of the couch in the family room. Shades can be white or cream or you can find many colors that will provide a nice accent to your home's d?cor. The hardware of swing arm lamps, meaning the base that attaches to the wall and the arms themselves can be black, white, brass, nickel, or copper, so you will be able to find the combination that works best for you.
