If you are in the process of purchasing a desktop computer – believe it or not there are still many applications that require desktop computers, as not everything can be solved with a tablet – one of the things to think about is maximizing your investment in a monitor. To put this in another way, you want to get the cheapest monitor possible to work with your desktop. For starters, do you need the latest and greatest flat screen monitor from amongst all the available monitors? If you buy, say, one of the leading brands, you'll find that there may be certain features you do not need. You will likely find an HDMI cable interface and possibly a cable for it. If you do, then you'll know this monitor was built for gaming and 3D gaming. If you are just going to be doing spreadsheets and other standard computer items such as documents, you really don't need the HDMI interface. Or, have you run into this type of monitor? It is a specialized digital interface with what looks like a plug and pins within the same space. This is a digital interface and takes specialized digital signals that your video card puts out – you'll notice there are several specialized interfaces, aside from the usual video connector (VGA) – you'll find that you don't need the extra digital interfaces. All you need, to be truthful, is the VGA interface. Indeed, when you are looking for an inexpensive monitor all you really need is a flat-screen display with a VGA input monitor and you're ready to go. So, here is what you have to look for to keep your costs down: 1. A flat-screen display of about 15 to 17 inches 2. A standard VGA connector 3. A standard VGA cable 4. Stay away from specialized digital connectors which will mean you need a more expensive video card or output 5. Stay away from an HDMI connector You'll find that if you use these guidelines you'll be able to pick-up an inexpensive monitor for between $85 (if you don't mind a used one) to about $150 (if you have to have a brand-new one). If you really want to keep costs down, you might also opt for a standard CRT or large flat screen computer display. You can find these all over popular auction sites for about $100 and they do give you good resolution, although you won't really be able to play games on them, unless it’s an older game.
