What Can Be Powered With Different Sizes of Generators

Home Business
You have probably seen generators in the store and thought you might never need one. Perhaps you have an RV and have toyed with the idea of generators for it. Understanding the different uses for generators and which generators produce enough power to run certain things will help you navigate the world of generators. Generators come in sizes that are very small as well as very large generators and generators of every size in between. Generators can burn gasoline, diesel or propane gas. The inverter type of generators can be powered from an automobile battery or a deep-cycle battery. Depending on your needs, you will want to look at portable generators, standby generators, or inverters. During a power failure, if all you need generators to do is to power a few lights, an emergency radio and perhaps one or two items that need to be plugged in, small generators or a small inverter that plugs into the car's lighter will be sufficient. For a few more needs, such as the ability to operate a computer and a microwave oven in addition to the lights, you will want to look at generators that produce 1000 watts and allow for things to be plugged into with an extension cord. Moving up to an important appliance like the fridge added to the package means you would need to look at generators that put out 2500 to 3500 watts; again with extension cord options. If you add the water heater and furnace blower or a room air conditioner, then you'll want generators that produce 5000 watts of power and are hard-wired into the circuitry of your home. As you can see, choosing the right generators is partly a function of determining what your priorities are in the case of an outage. Another factor to consider when choosing generators is how many watts each of those items uses so that you can determine which generators are capable of powering them. Power is measured in watts. The kinds of items that use the most watts, thus larger generators, would be whole house heat pumps or air conditioning units. If your goal is to keep your whole house warm, then you will need to look at very large generators or smaller generators and alternate heating sources. Another issue when using generators is the need for surge protection. When the power goes out, everything goes off. The generators recognize the problem and turn on the things that are connected to them, which creates a surge. This could cause problems with sensitive equipment, such as computers. Smaller generators have a harder time handling this type of surge while larger generators do pretty well with it. However, you should know that larger generators cost more money, and you could use small generators while staggering power usage. Generators really come in handy when the power goes out, and you can find generators of all sizes and generators for all different kinds of uses. By determining your needs, you will know the types of generators you should be considering. Knowing how many watts different electrical items use allows you to choose generators that provide enough power.
