What is an electric generator? An electric generator converts mechanical energy to electric energy by using a magnetic field to create a steady flow of electrons using a rotor a stator, an armature and a field. In slightly simpler terms, it is a device that uses fuel to supply electric power. There are many different ways to fuel an electric generator, including diesel, gasoline, natural gas, propane or tri-fuel. Gasoline and propane fueled generators tend to be the most popular. You should consider the availability of such fuels in your area when making your purchasing decision. An electric generator is most commonly used to restore electricity to your home during a power outage. Different types of generators are available for different needs and uses, however. A portable generator can be employed to power camping trailers or RVs or on construction sites. This type of electric generator is frequently used to temporarily restore power to a home during short-term power outages. They usually have wheels and handles for easy mobility. Residential standby systems, oh the other hand, are installed as permanent fixtures to a home. This type of electric generator will switch on automatically during a power outage and can restore electricity in as few as 20 seconds of an outage. A standby electric generator will also maintain electric power much longer than a portable unit. When shopping for an electric generator, there are many types and sizes to choose from. While a huge, top of the line generator that produces over 10,000 watts is impressive, that much power is not necessary for most people's uses. It is important to assess your needs when selecting a generator. A small, portable electric generator usually produces fewer than 3,000 watts and is used for recreational purposes. It can provide enough electricity for a trailer while camping, a grill and television when tailgating, or even power a few small home appliances. A medium size electric generator produces 3,000-6,000 watts and has the ability to power multiple home appliances such as a refrigerator, deep freezer, sump pump, furnace and/or lights in a few rooms. A medium size electric generator is a budget friendly option for emergency preparedness. A large electric generator typically produces 7,000 to 9,000 watts and will restore power to the majority of a small home or a few rooms of a more spacious home. A large electric generator is not capable of powering a central air conditioning unit, however. If running your home's air conditioning is important to you, you may want to invest in an extra large electric generator. An extra large electric generator produces upwards of 10,000 watts and can power your entire home, including a central A/C unit. Now that you know the electric generator basics, your purchasing decision should be a little easier. As with any major purchase, be sure to compare products and prices from different manufacturers. Look for a quality device manufactured from durable, long lasting materials. An electric generator is a good investment that you will reap benefits from for years to come.
