An electric generator converts mechanical energy to electric energy by using a magnetic field to create a steady flow of electrons. When shopping for an electric generator, there are many types and sizes to choose from. While a huge, top of the line generator that produces over 10,000 watts is impressive, that much power is not necessary for recreational purposes like camping. It is important to assess your needs when selecting an electric generator. A camping generator refers to a small, portable electric generator that typically produces fewer than 3,000 watts. It can provide enough electricity for a trailer while camping, a grill when tailgating, or power a few small home appliances in the event of a power outage. A camping generator usually will not power a large refrigerator. Most people opt to purchase an electric generator geared for emergency power supply. One budget friendly option is a medium size electric generator. This size of generator produces 3,000-6,000 watts and has the ability to power multiple appliances such as a refrigerator, deep freezer, sump pump, furnace and/or lights in a few rooms. A medium size emergency electric generator will not be able to power your entire home or run a central air conditioning unit, however. A large electric generator typically produces 7,000 to 9,000 watts and will restore power to the majority of a small home or multiple rooms of a larger home. Like the medium size electric generator, a large generator still won't be able to power a central air conditioning unit. Some people opt to buy a large electric generator and use the savings to purchase a small window A/C unit for emergency situations. If you live in a hot, humid climate prone to natural disasters you may want to consider investing in an extra large electric generator which is capable of restoring power throughout your entire home, including some air conditioning units. An extra large electric generator produces upwards of 10,000 watts. Even with an extra large electric generator you probably won't be able to run multiple a/c units simultaneously. Professional grade jobsite generators are specifically designed for everyday use. Like an emergency electric generator, a professional grade generator is available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 3,000 watts to over 15,000 watts. Because it is designed for everyday use, a professional grade generator has more features than an emergency generator and, as a result, is usually more expensive. If you only plan to use an electric generator once or twice a year, you probably do not need to purchase a professional grade jobsite generator. Regardless of what size of generator you choose, there are many ways to fuel an electric generator, including diesel, gasoline, natural gas, propane or tri-fuel. You should consider the availability of such fuels in your area when making your purchasing decision. An electric generator is a good investment. A generator can do everything from making recreational activities like camping or boating more enjoyable, to preventing your basement from flooding, to running your security system and keeping your home safe in times of crisis. Whatever your needs, you will be able to find the size and style electric generator that is right for you.
