Driving on America’s highways can be treacherous in any season of the year. Dangerous situations can occur in seconds. Good driving skills can help drivers survive when suddenly engaged in a game of reaction and wits. One evening while driving on the interstate near Orlando, Florida, two cars sped past me in a thoughtless game of chase at such high speeds, they made me appear to be parked at a Sonic. Suddenly, the driver in the lead lost control of his little sports car. I watched in horror as it spun around in two full circles, tires blowing out clouds of black smoke. Amazingly, the driver recovered control after smashing his front fender into the median blocks twice, and he sped off at a slightly slower speed. The driver of the speeding car was driving recklessly when his vehicle became uncontrollable, but overall, he handled what could have been a disastrous, multiple-car pileup into a controlled near-miss. The driver turned slightly into each skid to gently guide the vehicle straight again, and all the drivers around the careening car braked appropriately without locking up their own brakes and causing other accidents. Everyone on the highway seemed to be paying attention to driving and effectively ignoring mobile phones and other distractions at critical moments. The value of learning true driving skills is necessary education in what could be daily, treacherous traffic all over the country. Agencies that offer classes, such as a traffic school in Florida , can help anyone learn not only driving techniques, but also other ways to focus on the art of driving well. After all, in the end, everyone wants to drive defensively and arrive alive.
