Japanese cinema has captured the attention of the Western world since the 1950s. Aside from Japanese cinema’s enthralling reimagining of Renaissance works, their unique animated films, known as anime, have captivated the hearts and minds of people the world over. Some Western studios have even made anime-inspired cartoon series and manga-inspired comics. Anime is Japanese animated films usually derived from comics called manga. Manga is known for drawing styles and character designs that are now associated with anime. Many—if not most—of anime series are television adaptations of manga series. Anime is not limited to television series derived from manga. There are some fully animated feature films that are considered stand alone movies. These films are so well-done that they become famous both inside and outside Japan. Some of these films have been released in the United States and dubbed in English by Hollywood actors. Drawing and animation style in manga and anime are characterized by unusually western character designs for Japanese characters. Characters are drawn as tall, pale individuals with big, round eyes. Characters are also drawn with unusually colored hair—some pink, green or blue without implications of dyeing. However, character designs may vary between different genres. There are some anime series and movies with characters that have noticeably Japanese features although these are rare. These realistic looking anime series are generally aimed at mature audiences. People who watch anime movies belong to many age groups. Audiences all over the world love to watch anime movies and series so much that Western production companies have began creating comics and animated series inspired by manga and anime respectively. These employ Japanese animation character design conventions such as large eyes, extremely fair skin, and eyes and hair with unusual colors. These are just some conventions recognizable in anime and manga. Anime and manga fans call themselves otaku, and they may or may not be Japanese. Otaku are probably the western counterpart of geeks. They are known to dress like anime characters and collect items found in anime including action figures and DVDs. This sort of fascination usually starts from loving to watch anime movies
