Fine-tuning a resume is a smart investment. When you go in for an interview, having worked on a resume makes you more familiar with your qualifications. When the hiring manager says, “What do you consider your greatest strengths?” you’re all ready to give out your answer because you’ve recently spent time pondering that very question. Naturally, being tongue-tied or unsure in an interview can be a deal-breaker. You don’t get much time to bowl over the hiring manager, and if you fumble, he may see you as lacking in confidence. Few interviewers try to pry out information out of you, but they do make note when you say something thoughtless or forget a key aspect of job-hunting, such as asking for the job. It may not be the most qualified candidate, but it will almost always be the candidate who puts together an impressive resume, interviews well, and leaves the hiring manager with a positive feeling about having him join the company. Show initiative, follow-through, confidence, and get in there and close the sale. Having done the work beforehand— preparing a strong resume— you’re in a great position to raise the interviewer’s interest. A hiring manager often bases his questions on things you list in your resume’s skills summary, which gives you a chance to talk about ways that you have benefited companies in the past. WRITE A RESUME THAT RAISES EYEBROWS (IN A GOOD WAY) Always remember the importance of walking in the door with a strong presentation. Recruiters and hiring managers find it strange that people who are searching for jobs are willing to be tenacious about practically anything except writing and refining an excellent resume. The tendency is to get out the old one — written two or even five years back or—spruce it up, add on recent jobs, and throw it in an envelope with a cover letter. And then you sit back and wonder why your phone remains silent and nothing positive hits your email inbox. It’s amazing how many people out there are guilty of not presenting a resume that looks presentable and formatted correctly. Headhunters say that far too many job seekers are terrible at writing resumes. Are you one of these people missing the mark? You may inadvertently hide or camouflage your best work attributes, or, at the very least, fail to highlight them. So, the prospective employer gets bad vibes from the start because you aren’t making a promising first impression. He figures, If this person doesn’t know enough to understand the importance of presenting himself well in a resume, how can creativity, dependability, and intelligence be parts of the package? Fortunately, though, it’s easy to give your resume a makeover—either that, or bring out the wrecking ball, demolish it completely, and start from scratch. Of course, certain accepted basics always apply, but there are new and different ways to help you target (and bag) a certain job. Do ask professional resume writers for references and check with former clients about their experiences. Also, ask what the resume writer’s services include. Will they create one resume and that’s it? Or is the resume writer willing to turn out resumes customized to suit various job listings? Ensure your resume sticks out – it’s the first step towards landing a great job! Sonal Aurora is director and co-founder of Top Recruitment Company India.
